HMEF is a registered 501c3 non-profit corporation and our Tax ID number is 81-4367330
We are founded in memoriam of the late Dr. Chien -Tien Hsu (1912-1992), who practiced gynecology and gynecological oncology in Taipei, Taiwan, and pioneered surgical treatments for cervical and ovarian cancer. Aspects of his treatments are still relevant and used today. He founded Taipei Medical College in 1960 and was a professor in obstetrics, gynecology, and biochemistry.

Our History

DR. CHIEN-TIEN HSU was born and raised in Taiwan during one of the nation’s most tumultuous times: World War II, Taiwan’s transition to Nationalist rule, and the decades of martial law that followed. Despite the many challenges presented by the historical events of the time, Dr. CT Hsu became a renowned gynecologic surgeon and a leading researcher and educator in gynecologic oncology. Local folklore claims that he was inspired as a child to help improve women’s health after his mother fell ill and passed away. He developed a passion for educating medical students, residents, and young doctors throughout his life.
After graduating with an M.D. from Taihoku Medical College (now National Taiwan University) he travelled to Japan to earn his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Kyushu Imperial University (now Kyushu University, Japan). He then returned to Taiwan and eventually rose to become Professor and Chief of Gynecology and Obstetrics at National Taiwan University.
Dr. CT Hsu’s career interests were primarily in the surgical and medical treatments of cervical cancer. While championing radical surgery for cervical cancer, he also worked on identifying tumor markers and establishing adjuvant therapies for cervical cancer. He contributed about 350 articles to the Asian medical literature in the area of gynecologic oncology.
Among his many honors, he served as president of the Formosan Medical Association, president of the Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (Republic of China), an Executive Board Member of the Asia Oceania Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO).
In 1960 he co-founded what is now the Taipei Medical University (TMU) in Taipei, Taiwan. TMU currently educates over 6000 undergraduate and post-graduate medical students. The Chien-Tien Hsu Cancer Research Foundation was founded in 1964 and directed by many of his former students and residents. This organization is based in Taiwan and supports education and research in the region.
The Hsu Medical Education Foundation (HMEF) was established in 2017 as a 501c3 charitable corporation in the state of California. HMEF aims to continue Dr. CT Hsu’s vision for medical education in the United States.
