Community based solar fence in conflict villages of Bandipur Tiger Reserve to save Elephants.
Elephant movement is recorded near villages that are very close to the Bandipur Tiger Reserve bordering agricultural land. At places where solar powered fences are not working elephants have entered agricultural land disturbing farmers that create ground for conflict. Solar powered fence will help villagers from Crop raiding Elephants. Protecting farmer’s revenue will create conservation attitude among villagers to help save elephants is the objective of this project.
Identification of faults and continuous working of the fence is a challenge, hence prevention is better than cure and we wish to work on making the fence work all day and year long.
Volunteers participate in the following activity.
Phase one will target maintenance of existing solar power fence for evading Elephants from crop raiding.
Base line survey by collecting information of conflict.
Meeting farmers and prepare documentation.
Documentation of the above work.
Time line: Six months from the date of start of project.
Work updates: Every week work updates.

WCF members, farmers and students from Mangala village had an opportunity to interact with group of people from General Electricals (GE) a program organized by Soul buffalo.
In an earlier meeting with Mr. Akos Hivekovics of Soul Buffalo Expeditions arranged by Vishwa, our old friend who works in Serai resort in Bandipur. We planned a program with them about conflict with wildlife in Mangala village and the ground realities of living with the wildlife that they had to save. This interactive field based program was to speak through the voice of village farmers, students from conflict village in Bandipur Tiger Reserve.
Students from Mangala were to interact with GE group who were from different disciplines of work from different countries. They spoke about their work with the young students from Mangala village and children expressed that they were lucky to meet people from GE.
We also arranged an interaction with farmers from Mangala village and visited their house to know the practicalities of living in conflict with wildlife. Farmers - Nanjiah, Swamy, Murthy, Revanna, Basappa were marginal farmers from Mangala village who were also the beneficiaries of Community based solar fence. We arranged a translator to each group so they know what they are talking.
Interaction was great, practically they explained the problems faced by conflict animals especially Elephants and wild pig. Their basic income jeopardized because of crop raiding Elephants and wild pig how WCF intervened by “Community based solar fence to save Elephants” thus protecting farmer’s crop from Elephants and wild pig. How it has improvised their income, safety and livelihood from earlier days to today.
Next day an early birding trip was conducted and Mangala birding team went on to explain and identify birds to participants from GE, surprised by the interest and commitment in young students who finally identified around 35 birds in just 1 hour of birding, it was great experience for all, students, WCF and GE members.
The interaction was completed by thanks giving and memorable experience they take home.

Rescue and relocation of Tiger and Leopard is not just an easy task, planning our field work, identification, capture and release takes a test of our field expertise. Starts from tracking the Tiger on its trail and finding the right one through trap camera protocols. Identify the conflict animal, immobilization using Elephants, check for its health and translocation. An exceptional team work determined to save the illusive Tiger.
Join us on the journey of saving the Tiger.

One the major wildlife management challenges in India is dealing with conflict animals; it takes lot of field experience working towards practical solution to contain wildlife conflict. It also succumbs time and money to resolute conflict. WCF team works with commitment to save wildlife in very high conflict areas like Bandipur and Nagarahole Tiger Reserves. (BTR & NTR) our field expertise has drawn attention of the government and recently Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) of Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) contacted us to conduct awareness program in villages close to Bandipur. Enforcement wing from Karnataka Forest Department, Mysore took our help to nab poachers and bring wildlife cases to a logical end.
